The word Kirpan has two roots - the first root is: Kirpa, which means "Mercy, grace, compassion, kindness" and the second root is Aan, which in turn means "Honor, grace, dignity".

It is a Punjabi (Indian) word for 'Sword' or 'dagger', that connotes a philosophy of respect for the material arts and weapons, not as vehicles of aggression, but as a means of defending the defenseless.
